Transaction overhead
-
Autumn’s on its way. I made my first baked potato of the season, with baked beans and hot sauce. Food of the gods.
-
Four gym visits. No sooner had I said “I can stop losing weight now” than I took my eye off the ball and immediately started gaining it again, so the struggle continues. Why can’t I just have a normal, stable body mass like a normal, stable person.
-
On Tuesday I met Phil to eat lunch and complain about computers as he passed through the big smoke. I suggested the new-to-me Spitalfields branch of Roti King even though their vegan options are thin on the ground. I had the pulled shiitake rendang and it was in fact delicious so I might go back just for that.
-
One of my London officemates moved away this week and someone brought in vegan cupcakes to give them a little leaving party. It’s miraculous that these kinds of treats are both readily available and tasty enough that nobody outwardly begrudges forsaking the non-vegan version.
-
Yesterday I went out for lunch at a worthy local enterprise who unfortunately made me a bad sandwich on stale bread. I want to support them but I won’t eat there again if they can’t even get that right.
-
I finished Bear Head. I really liked it in the end — it’s pulpy and pacey and satirical, and a nice easy read despite how long it took me to plod through it.
I’ve started Bee Speaker which is shaping up to be another sweeping expansion in the scope of the story. I’m enjoying it a lot so far.
-
I speculatively bought Shroud before cancelling my three-month discount Audible subscription, so that joins Piranesi and Project Hail Mary on the backlog.
-
I watched Perfect Days and thought it was beautiful. Some of Wim Wenders’ films are a bit… you know… boring?, but the performances and cinematography in this one really worked for me.
-
My recent breadmaking used up the last of my flour. I was disappointed to discover that a 16kg sack has become so expensive that it’s cheaper to buy it in 1.5kg bags from the shop down the road (or Ocado).
I’m lazy so I ordered 16kg anyway and accepted having to pay a premium to buy in bulk (?!) for the sake of reducing transaction overhead. Still seems wrong.

The test of the national emergency alerts system just went off. Jesus. Don’t threaten me with a good time.
