Weeknotes 291
Thinking time
-
Still very busy and working long hours to drop fewer balls than I otherwise would. I already need another break. Three weeks til the summer bank holiday.
-
Three gyms. Slowly, slowly, nearly there.
-
I’m listening to audiobooks at the gym a bit less often because I need the thinking time, but I’m making occasional progress. I’d guess I’m about halfway through Bear Head — Audible makes it almost impossible to tell — and enjoying it quite a lot.
-
Yesterday I caught up with Mike over lunch while he was in London. Always a pleasure to see a friendly Ruby face.
-
Today I rode over to Black Cat and ate waffles for lunch. I regret nothing.
-
I watched Flow, a beautiful film which deserved its Oscar. I loved that the animals behaved (mostly) like animals in an otherwise fantastical world. I enjoyed The Wild Robot too, but Flow is the one I’ll be coming back to.
-
I also saw Oppenheimer despite my reluctance. It’s visually & aurally impressive and not as straightforwardly bad as Tenet, but it turned out to be exactly as pompous and naff as I’d feared. It’s a full hour too long and still manages to avoid talking about any of the things that were actually interesting about the Manhattan Project, instead falling back on “are we the baddies?” without exploring that question in any real depth.
-
I’m four episodes into Dexter: Resurrection and it’s surprisingly decent for something that had a high chance of being a train wreck. The cast is impressive and it does a better job of recapturing the feel & tone of the early seasons of the original show than New Blood or Original Sin did. I find New York City more interesting than Miami so the change of scenery works well. At heart it’s quite a silly show but I’m finding this iteration entertaining so far.
-
I started watching season three of Foundation. It remains absolute nonsense but it’s nice to see Alexander Siddig again. I have to remember to let it wash over me without thinking too hard.
-
CLUB MEXICANA WATCH: they’ve abruptly withdrawn from Queen of Hoxton, which I only know because I spotted it in tiny text in a now-expired Instagram story.
I honestly don’t understand why they’re so rubbish at communicating basic information to their customers. I like the food but this aspect of their behaviour really puts me off.
-
I haven’t properly listened to the new Wet Leg album yet, but mangetout is a lovely joke isn’t it?
